How can you not forget the mid-90s?
It was a flagship year for most fragrances. It was the era when marketing campaigns define a perfume’s success. It was also the year when fragrances were flankerized – the most flankered fragrance is Calvin Klein’s CK One and other fragrances in their portfolio. However, not all brands jumped in the flanker bandwagon. Or maybe they’ve deferred the launch to a much later year.
One interesting fragrance is Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio. To cut the story short, this floral-fruity pseudo-aquatic scent hit the perfumery by storm. It’s described as a fragrance reminiscent of the lazy afternoons spent in the Mediterranean. The combination of fruits, flowers and woods was well-executed.
Acqua di Gio comes in a his and her fragrance but it was never reinvented since its release. It was only this year that Giorgio Armani resurrected the scent and it’s not even called a summer or spring version. It’s a different take on the original altogether. Acqua di Gioia, a new fragrance for women, will grace the perfumery this June.
The composition mimics the original with the inclusion of mint leaves and brown sugar accords. According to wwd.com, “it’s an addictive aquatic wood, touched by the caress of sunny flower petals.” Other notes in this fragrance are: limone primo fiore, aquatic green accord, pink pepper, jasmine sambac, peony, cedar and labdanum.
Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia will be available in 30ml, 50ml and 100ml eau de toilette.

Idole d’Armani, an ode to femininity. The Giorgio Armani website aptly describes it as “an irresistible combination of grace, beauty and independent spirit… a tribute to this ideal and to women everywhere.” Idole is Armani’s attempt to create another mass-market fragrance that centers on a woman’s sensuality.
Perfumer Bruno Jovanovic, also the nose behind Onde Extase (2008), designed this fragrance. The notes are: top, “dazzling bitter orange, juicy pear, ginger and davana“; middle, “audacious rose loukoum and mythical jasmine blended boldly with saffron absolute, creating a honey-coloured subtle spicy note; and the base, “luminous and sensual, unexpected styrax, patchouli and vetiver.” The bottle design is rather minimalist: art deco inspired with a wave of fine lines decorate the outline of the crystal round bottle.
Idole is a balance between the old and the new. Calling it a classic is quite tempting but not rightly so. Once the fruity-floral component unfolds, emphasis on the public’s penchant for modern fragrances is immediately recognized. These qualities make mainstream fragrances distinct and well, ubiquitous. The contrast of notes evokes a fresh fruity approach at the beginning then develops into a warm and elegant base of musky woods. The sweetness is not obtrusive. In fact, the pairing of jasmine and saffron sits well with the pear notes.
Idole reminds me of Dolce&Gabbana’s The One. Both are beautiful fragrances to begin with – well-balanced, versatile, lovely – but there something seems to be lacking. Armani could’ve added more character in it so that it won’t end up smelling like other scents. As for sillage and longevity, Idole delivers.

The scent of the east, exotic with a tinge of spicy-sweetness that clings so deep. The heavy aroma lingers and at some point, the nose gets hooked on the luxurious aroma of the essential oils. The Armani Onde collection is a grand display of eastern fragrances. It’s composed of three elegant scents that defines each region in the east.
Onde Mystere, an inspiration of the Middle East, is an oriental spicy fragrance. The traditional musky ambiance of amber, incense and Moroccan rose bring out its enigmatic appeal. The mystical charm is embellished with vanilla and spices to amplify the warmth that dissipates in the dry down.
The decant is work of art as it is sculpted with ripples of violet waves all throughout. A metallic black stopper caps the enchanting juice inside. There’s also a red colored tassel dangling at the neck of the bottle.
Onde Mystere is a romantic perfume. With its oriental-spicy composition, the impression conveyed is sheer elegance. It is daring at first because anyone who catches the scent will say that it’s a tad overwhelming. The scent really rises up to the occasion especially on warm days that’s why it is best to wear Mystere at night and cooler months.
Armani Onde Collection also include Onde Xtase and Onde Vertige. Check out these fragrances at discount perfumes online.
